“her english was unusually good" was a quote found in a national geographic magazine from circa 1930s when these white american male journalists went to japan + apparently chatted with japanese womxn. the article reported this + how the japanese womxn "knew american wives must live in an earthly paradise" because of the "gallant american husbands"; the hair is from a photo from the mid-1930s of noboribetsu on hokkaido; the kimono is composed of cut outs of a forest, map of the ocean, green bananas + pieces of the jazzy jeff / fresh prince cd album cover i found (stole) from my brother + sister's cd collection from when they were in middle school; the obi is made of old washi paper + a magazine scrap of a mango -- an homage to my favorite pickled lihing mangos my dad + uncle often made; gold leaf paper for the "fuck off" + door knockaz i usually rock • something so special about creating in displacement + reflection from afar • funny because when i came back to frisco i was sketching at @andytownsf & a boston man started talking to me about my family’s 5, now 6, generations in san francisco; after all of this he told me “well your english is great” + the universe conspired because i had a mini print of this + just gave it to him + he thereafter started fiddling with my pen case (holy grail) without asking out of seemed anxiety. he then started asking me where to go for excellent chinese food, then dumplings, then vegetarian dumplings to which i fairly or unfairly replied, “i can’t serve as your cultural ambassador”.
